How to Choose the Right Taxi in Cluj-Napoca

If you are visiting Cluj-Napoca, a few simple checks will save you from the small number of drivers who make their living from people who do not know the local rules.

1. Check that it is licensed

A licensed taxi in Cluj-Napoca carries a roof sign, the company name on the doors, a licence number, and an authorisation displayed inside the car. Unmarked cars offering rides outside the airport or the railway station are not licensed taxis, and you have no recourse if something goes wrong.

2. The rates must be displayed on the door

Prices are regulated by the city and must be printed on the vehicle. For reference:

• Day rate (06:00–22:00): 4.05 lei/km, with a starting fee equal to the per-kilometre rate
• Night rate (22:00–06:00): 4.75 lei/km
• Intercity, daytime: 4.50 lei/km up to 200 km, 4.05 lei/km beyond

If the sticker shows something noticeably higher, walk away. This is the single most common way visitors get overcharged.

3. Booking ahead removes most of the risk

When you book in advance, the price is agreed before the journey, not discovered at the end. There is no meter to argue about and no negotiation at the destination. For airport arrivals it also means someone is waiting for you rather than you looking for a car.

4. Reviews still tell you something

Look at recent reviews rather than the overall score, and look for specifics: did the driver arrive on time, was the price what was agreed, was the car clean. A pattern of complaints about the final price differing from the quote is the signal that matters.

5. Agree the details before the journey

Before you set off, be clear about:

• The exact destination address, not just the area
• The price, or how it will be calculated
• How you will pay — cash, card or invoice
• Whether there are surcharges for luggage or the time of day (with us, there are none)

Anyone who will not answer these clearly before you get in will not become clearer afterwards.

6. The car itself

A functioning seatbelt in the back, working air conditioning, decent tyres — on a long intercity drive these stop being cosmetic. If you are travelling with a small child, ask about a child seat when you book rather than on the day.
