Private Transfer vs Coach from Cluj: Which Is Better?

For most intercity routes from Cluj you have two realistic options: a coach ticket or a private transfer. Neither wins outright — it depends on how many of you there are and what you are optimising for.

Price

Per person, a coach is cheaper for one traveller. That changes fast with numbers, because a transfer is priced per car, not per seat.

Take Cluj to Sibiu. A transfer is from 700 lei. Alone, that is a lot against a coach ticket. Split between four people it is 175 lei each — and now you are comparing a door-to-door ride at your chosen time against a coach that leaves when it leaves.

The break-even is usually around three passengers.

Flexibility of timing

A coach runs to a timetable, typically a few departures a day, and rarely at the hours you need — early morning flights and late-night arrivals in particular. A transfer departs when you say, including 3am.

This matters most for airport connections. If your flight lands at midnight, the coach question does not arise.

Comfort

A modern coach is perfectly comfortable for two hours. Over four or five, the differences show: no intermediate stops in a car, luggage in the boot rather than shared racks, temperature you control, and the ability to stop when you want.

Travelling with small children, elderly parents or a lot of luggage tips this decisively.

Where you start and where you end

This is the factor people underestimate. A coach takes you from bus station to bus station. Add getting to the station in Cluj and from the station at the other end — often another taxi at both ends, with luggage — and the total journey is longer and more expensive than the ticket suggests.

A transfer is address to address. For destinations with no bus station worth the name — mountain guesthouses, spa hotels, villages — the coach is not even an option.

• You are travelling with children, elderly passengers or heavy luggage
• You want stops along the way, which a coach cannot offer

And a third option

For 5 to 17 people, neither applies: the 17-seat minibus costs less per person than most coach tickets while keeping every advantage of a private ride — your departure time, your route, door to door.
