Cluj-Napoca to Bistrita Transfer: Distance, Prices and Booking

Bistrita-Nasaud has no airport of its own, which makes Cluj the county gateway and this one of our steadiest routes. Demand comes from business travel, family visits and, increasingly, tourism heading for the lakes and mountains further east.

Distance and driving time

Around 100 km, covered in 1 hour to 1h20. The route follows the DN1C through Apahida, Bontida, Gherla and Dej, then east towards Bistrita.

It is hill country with villages imposing speed limits, but no difficult sections. At peak hours the only place that slows things down is the exit from Cluj towards Apahida.

Why a private transfer

• The train is slow. Rail services exist but take much longer and run infrequently.
• Flight times do not match coaches. If you land in the evening, the last departure has gone.
• The airport is on the right side. Cluj Airport sits on the eastern edge of the city, so you set off on the DN1C immediately without crossing town.
• Onward destinations have no public transport at all.

What to see in and around Bistrita

Bistrita is one of the seven Saxon fortress towns of Transylvania, and its medieval centre still shows it: the Evangelical Church with the tallest tower in the region, the merchants arcades on Piata Centrala, and stretches of the old town walls. It is also, thanks to Bram Stoker, the town where Jonathan Harker stops on his way to the Borgo Pass.

Beyond the town:

• Colibita — a reservoir ringed by fir forest in the Calimani Mountains, with no public transport link
• Sangeorz-Bai — a spa town with mineral springs
• Baile Figa — salt baths near Beclean
