The historic centre of Sighișoara has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, and it has something rare: the citadel is not an open-air museum but a neighbourhood where people still live, with a school, churches and colourful houses on cobbled streets. From Cluj it is a well-balanced day trip.
How long the drive takes
About 155 km and 2h–2h30. Leave at 8:30 and you arrive around 11:00, with the whole day for the citadel.
What to see in the citadel
- The Clock Tower — the town's symbol, about 64 m tall, with figurines that change for each day of the week. Inside is the History Museum, and the top gallery overlooks the whole town.
- Vlad Dracul House — by tradition the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, right next to the Clock Tower.
- The Scholars' Stairs — a covered wooden stairway from 1642, with nearly 180 steps, built so pupils could reach the hilltop school in winter.
- The Church on the Hill at the top of the stairs, and the Saxon cemetery beside it, among the trees on the slope.
- The guild towers — the Shoemakers', Tailors' and Blacksmiths' towers, each once defended by the guild it is named after.
Time needed: 3–4 hours including lunch. The citadel is small and walkable; wear comfortable shoes, as the paving is uneven and there is a lot of climbing.
When to go
At the end of July the town usually hosts the Sighișoara Medieval Festival, with costumes, concerts and a fair inside the citadel. Spectacular, but very crowded; for quiet streets and photos without crowds, pick a weekday in spring or autumn.
What to combine it with
- Biertan, about 30 km away — the best-known Saxon fortified church, also UNESCO-listed. Adds 2 hours.
- Târgu Mureș if you pass through — the Palace of Culture is worth an hour.
What the transfer costs
- Cluj – Sighișoara: ~155 km, from 700 lei per car (up to 4 passengers), one way
- Cluj Airport – Sighișoara, if you land in Cluj and want to go straight there
For a same-day return with waiting, we agree a package price when you book. With 3–4 people the cost per person gets close to a coach ticket, but you leave when you want and lose no time on connections.
Larger groups can travel by 17-seat minibus.
