Corvin Castle in Hunedoara turns up on almost every list of Europe's most beautiful castles, and deservedly so: Gothic towers, a long wooden bridge on tall stone piers, vaulted halls and an inner courtyard that looks exactly like a medieval castle should. From Cluj it is an easy day trip.
How long the drive takes
It is about 178 km and 2h15–2h45. Almost the whole way is motorway: A3 to Turda, A10 to Sebeș, then A1 towards Deva, with the last stretch from Simeria to Hunedoara on a national road.
Leave Cluj at 8:00 and you are at the castle before 10:30 — ahead of the big tour groups that usually arrive around midday.
What to see at the castle
The castle was built in the 15th century by John Hunyadi (Iancu de Hunedoara) on the site of an older fortification and remodelled in the 17th century by Prince Gabriel Bethlen — hence the mix of Gothic and Renaissance you see today.
- The entrance bridge — long, wooden, on high stone piers over the Zlaști valley. The castle's most photographed view.
- The Knights' Hall — the great reception hall, with marble columns and Gothic vaults.
- The Diet Hall above it, used for assemblies and ceremonies.
- The Neboisa Tower ("do not fear") and the Capistrano Tower — the defensive towers, with views over the whole complex.
- The well in the courtyard — legend says three Turkish prisoners dug it through rock, promised their freedom if they reached water.
The family name is traditionally linked to the raven holding a ring on their coat of arms. John's son, Matthias Corvinus, became King of Hungary — and was born in Cluj.
Time needed: 1.5–2 hours. Opening hours and ticket prices change by season, so check the castle's official website before you go.
A typical day
- 8:00 — pick-up in Cluj, from your address or hotel
- 10:30–12:30 — castle visit
- 12:30–13:30 — lunch in Hunedoara
- 14:00 — head back, with an optional stop on the way
- ~17:00 — back in Cluj
For a second stop, the easiest are Deva, whose hilltop fortress you see from the motorway, or Alba Iulia for the Alba Carolina Citadel. Each adds 1.5–2 hours.
What the transfer costs
Prices are per car, up to 4 passengers — not per person:
- Cluj – Corvin Castle: ~178 km, from 810 lei, one way
For a same-day return trip with the driver waiting while you visit, you do not pay two separate rides: we agree a package price when you book, waiting time included. Tell us your departure time and the stops you want in the booking form.
For groups of 8–17, the 17-seat minibus brings the cost per person down considerably.
