Salt Baths, Thermal Water and Aquaparks Near Cluj

Transylvania sits on old salt deposits, which is why the region has an unusual concentration of salt lakes and thermal baths. Within a couple of hours of Cluj you can reach everything from a village pool to the largest spa resort in the country.

Baile Cojocna — the closest (~30 km)

Salt lakes in a village half an hour from Cluj, with a basic but functional bathing area. Popular precisely because it is close: you can go for an afternoon. Expect simple facilities rather than a resort. From 140 lei.

Turda salt baths and the Durgau lakes (~32 km)

Salt lakes formed in old mine workings, next to the famous salt mine. The water is extremely saline — you float without effort. It combines naturally with a visit to the mine itself in the same day. From 150 lei.

Baile Baita — near Gherla (~45 km)

A small salt bath complex, quieter than the Turda lakes and rarely crowded even in August. Good for families who want water without queues. From 210 lei.

Baile Figa — Beclean (~83 km)

One of the better developed salt bath sites in the region, with pools, slides and salt water treatment areas. An hour and a half from Cluj, and a realistic day trip. From 390 lei.

Nymphaea Aquapark, Oradea (~150 km)

The largest aquapark in this part of the country: indoor and outdoor pools, slides, thermal water. Two hours from Cluj, so it works as a long day out or an overnight stay. From 680 lei.

Baile Felix and Baile 1 Mai (~160 km)

Baile Felix is the largest spa resort in Romania, open all year, with thermal water and treatment facilities used mainly for rheumatic conditions and rehabilitation. Baile 1 Mai, next door, is known for a protected water lily that grows nowhere else in Europe. From 720 lei.

Bear Lake, Sovata (~160 km)

The largest heliothermal lake in Europe — the salt content traps heat in layers, so the water is warmer below the surface than at the top. Open for bathing in summer, roughly mid-June to early September. From 720 lei.

Ocna Sibiului (~170 km)

A cluster of salt lakes in old mine shafts, some of them remarkably deep, in a small town near Sibiu. Quieter than the better known resorts and easy to combine with a day in Sibiu. From 770 lei.

How to choose, in short

• Half a day, close by → Cojocna or the Turda lakes
• A full day with children → Baile Figa or Nymphaea
• Treatment and a longer stay → Baile Felix
• Something unusual → Bear Lake at Sovata, or the deep shafts at Ocna Sibiului
• Combining with sightseeing → the Turda lakes with the salt mine, or Ocna Sibiului with Sibiu
