Răchițele Waterfall, known as the Bridal Veil (Vălul Miresei), is one of the finest waterfalls in the Apuseni: the water drops more than 30 metres over a broad rock face in two steps and spreads into a white curtain that really does look like a veil. It is on the Stanciu valley above the village of Răchițele, in Mărgău commune, below the Vlădeasa Mountains.

The legend behind the name

The story has several versions, but all begin with a bride: she is said to have fallen from the rocks on her wedding day, and her veil stayed caught there, turned into the waterfall. Every local tells it a little differently.

How long the drive takes

About 79 km and 1h30–1h50 from Cluj, via Huedin and Mărgău. The last kilometres from Răchițele to the waterfall are on a narrower forest road.

The car gets close to the waterfall; the final stretch of about a kilometre is on foot, on an easy path, in 15–20 minutes. Wear closed shoes — the rocks near the falls are wet.

When it looks best

  • Spring (April–June), after the snowmelt: the most water and the fullest veil.
  • Summer, after rain; in dry spells the waterfall thins noticeably.
  • Winter, when it freezes into a wall of ice — spectacular, but the forest road can be hard going after snowfall. Ask us about conditions first.

After the 2022 storms, access was closed for a while until Salvamont and the park administration cleared the fallen trees from the path. If there have been strong storms recently, check Salvamont Cluj announcements first.

What else is nearby

  • The Vlădeasa Mountains — marked trails lead from the waterfall towards Vlădeasa chalet, for experienced hikers (full-day routes).
  • Huedin, on the way, for a lunch stop.
  • Beliș-Fântânele Lake, if you want to make a weekend of it in the Apuseni.

What the transfer costs

A visit to the falls takes 1–2 hours, so the most practical option is a same-day return with the driver waiting: we agree the package price when you book.
