Cluj-Napoca to Sibiu Transfer: Route, Price and What to Know

Cluj to Sibiu is the single most requested tourist route we run. It is the backbone of nearly every Transylvania itinerary, and since the motorway between Turda and Sebes opened it has become one of the easiest drives in the country.

Distance and driving time

Around 155 km, covered in 1h45 to 2h15. The route is almost entirely high-speed road: the A3 motorway to Campia Turzii, the A10 to Sebes and the A1 to Sibiu.

Because there is so little ordinary road, the timing barely varies with the hour of the day — useful when you have a hotel check-in or a tour booked. The exception is winter, when the stretch between Sebes and Sibiu catches fog and crosswinds; allow an extra 20–30 minutes.

Why not the train

There is no fast direct rail link between Cluj and Sibiu. The journey involves a long detour and a change, and takes several hours more than the drive. Add getting to the station at one end and from the station at the other, with luggage, and the comparison stops being close.

Coaches exist and are cheaper per person, but they run to their own timetable and drop you at a bus station. Split between three or four people, a private car is competitive and takes you to your door.

What to see in Sibiu

Piata Mare and Piata Mica, the Bridge of Lies, the Council Tower, the Brukenthal Museum and the houses with the famous eyelid windows in the roofs. Outside the centre, the ASTRA open-air museum at Dumbrava Sibiului is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. In summer, the Transfagarasan is within reach for a day trip.
