Cluj-Napoca to Alba Iulia Transfer: Route, Prices and Visitor Guide

Alba Iulia is the most rewarding day trip from Cluj that most visitors have never heard of. Its star-shaped Vauban citadel has been fully restored and is one of the best preserved of its kind in Europe — and it is only an hour and a half away.

Distance and driving time

Around 105 km, covered in 1 hour to 1h20. The route is mostly motorway: the A3 to Campia Turzii, then the A10 towards Sebes with the Alba Iulia exit.

Because so much of it is high-speed road, the timing is predictable throughout the day.

The price

From 480 lei per car for up to 4 passengers, fixed when you book. See the Cluj to Alba Iulia route page.

For a day trip with waiting and a return the same evening, we agree a package price at booking — better value than two separate rides.

What to see

  • The Alba Carolina Citadel — seven bastions in a star shape, with baroque gates. The changing of the guard takes place daily; it is worth timing your arrival around it.
  • The Coronation Cathedral, where the first king and queen of Greater Romania were crowned in 1922
  • St Michael Roman Catholic Cathedral — the oldest building in the citadel, dating to the 13th century
  • The Union Museum and the Union Hall, where the 1918 union was declared
  • The Principal Palace and the restored baroque streets inside the walls

The whole citadel is pedestrianised and walkable in half a day, with cafes and restaurants inside the walls.

Combining with other stops

  • Jidvei — wine tastings on the Tarnave hills, an hour away
  • Sibiu — another 70 km down the motorway, easy to combine over two days
  • Corvin Castle — Romania most spectacular Gothic castle, further along the same road
  • Rimetea — the white-house village, a detour on the way back

Private transfer versus the alternatives

The train takes considerably longer and leaves you at a station outside the citadel. Coaches run to their own timetable and drop you at a bus station. With a transfer you are dropped at the citadel gate, you choose the departure time, and if you are three or four people the cost per head is comparable.

Practical tips

  • Check the time of the changing of the guard before you set off and plan around it
  • Summer afternoons inside the citadel are hot with little shade — mornings are better
  • Wear comfortable shoes; the citadel is large and entirely cobbled
  • Allow four to five hours on the ground for a proper visit

Arriving by air

If you are flying into Cluj, we can drive you straight from the terminal: see Cluj Airport to Alba Iulia, 115 km, from 520 lei, with flight tracking and a meet-and-greet at arrivals.
