The village of white houses
Rimetea is the village below Piatra Secuiului, with white houses and green shutters restored under a programme to conserve traditional architecture. It is one of the most photographed places in Transylvania and a constant weekend destination for people from Cluj. The distance is around 70 km, covered in an hour and a quarter to an hour and 35 minutes.
The route
We head towards Turda, then take the road into the Aries Valley through Buru and climb to Rimetea. The final stretch runs through a gorge, with rock walls on both sides — in itself one of the finest short drives in the region.
What to do there
- Piatra Secuiului — the climb takes 1.5–2 hours and opens up a view over the whole valley; it is the only place in Romania where the sun appears to rise twice, because of the shape of the ridge
- Coltesti fortress — medieval ruins a few kilometres away on the same road
- The ethnographic museum in the centre of the village
- Climbing — the area is well known for its routes
Practical notes
There is no convenient public transport from Cluj to Rimetea, and accommodation consists of traditional houses scattered through the village. We drive straight to the address. We recommend agreeing the return time when you book, especially for a day trip.
