A Two-Day Maramures Trip from Cluj: Route, Stops and Costs

Historic Maramures is one of the few places in Europe where traditional wooden architecture is not a reconstruction for visitors but buildings people still walk into on a Sunday morning. Eight of its churches are on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

You can reach it from Cluj, but not in a day. Here is why, and what the itinerary that does work looks like.

Why not in a single day

The numbers are straightforward. Sapanta, the northernmost point, is 240 km away and 3h45–4h30 of driving. There and back is 8 to 9 hours in the car. Leave at 7am, arrive at 11, and to be home by 8pm you have to turn around at 4. That leaves five hours on the ground, an hour of which goes on moving between sights.

It is possible. But you will have seen the Merry Cemetery and little else, for nine hours of driving. For similar money, two days show you four times as much.

Day 1: Cluj → Rohia → Barsana

Recommended departure: 8:00–9:00.

Stop 1: Rohia Monastery (120 km, 2h–2h30)

Rohia sits on a wooded hill in the Lapus region, halfway along the route — the natural place to break the drive. It is known as the Jerusalem of Transylvania and is associated with the writer and monk Nicolae Steinhardt, who lived and is buried there; the monastery library carries his name.

Allow an hour, or an hour and a half with the library.

Stop 2: Barsana Monastery (215 km in total, another 1h15 from Rohia)

Barsana is the most photographed wooden monastic complex in Romania — tall, sharp spires in the local style, set in careful gardens in the Iza Valley. The road from Baia Mare crosses the Gutai Pass, with good views and hairpins that call for moderate speed.

Allow 1.5–2 hours.

Where to stay

Around Barsana, Vadu Izei or Sighet. Guesthouses in the Iza Valley are traditional houses, many with carved wooden gates — part of the experience.

Day 2: Iza Valley → Sapanta → Sighet → Cluj

Recommended departure: 8:30.

Stop 3: The wooden churches of the Iza Valley

Along the road between Barsana and Sighet are several of the eight UNESCO churches: Ieud Deal (the oldest, 17th century), Poienile Izei (with remarkable murals, including a Last Judgement scene), Bogdan Voda. You will not see them all — pick two.

Allow 30–40 minutes each, including the detour off the main road.

Stop 4: The Merry Cemetery at Sapanta

The reason most people make the trip. Sapanta lies a few kilometres from the Ukrainian border, about 20 km past Sighet. Blue-painted wooden crosses carry rhyming epitaphs telling each person story with humour — ironic, occasionally merciless, and entirely unlike any other cemetery.

Allow an hour. It is smaller than visitors expect, but the epitaphs are worth reading rather than just photographing.

Stop 5: Sighetu Marmatiei

Sighet holds the Memorial to the Victims of Communism and of the Resistance, housed in the former political prison where much of Romania interwar elite died. It is a heavy visit, but one of the best museums of its kind in Europe.

Allow 1.5–2 hours.

The return

Sighet to Cluj is 3h30–4h15. Leaving at 4pm puts you back around 8pm.

Ways to extend

• The Vaser Valley steam train from Viseu de Sus — a narrow-gauge steam railway through a gorge. It takes half a day, so it needs a third day or something dropped.
• The Maramures Village Museum in Sighet, if you have spare time.
• Ocna Sugatag, for salt baths, if you want a relaxed stop.
