The Merry Cemetery
Sapanta is the village in northern Maramures that holds the Merry Cemetery — blue-painted wooden crosses with rhyming epitaphs that tell, with humour, the story of each person buried there. It is unique in the world and, for many international visitors, the main reason to travel to Romania. From Cluj it is around 240 km, or 3 hours 45 minutes to 4 hours 30 minutes of driving.
The route
We take the DN1C through Gherla and Dej, then head to Baia Mare and over the Gutai Pass to Sighetu Marmatiei, from where it is another 20 km or so to Sapanta, close to the Ukrainian border. The final third is mountain and valley road, with remarkable scenery but moderate speeds.
Why we recommend two days
A same-day return means 8–9 hours of driving for an hour-long visit. The version that makes sense is a two-day circuit with accommodation in the area and stops at:
- Barsana Monastery and the wooden churches of the Iza Valley
- Sighetu Marmatiei and the Memorial to the Victims of Communism
- Rohia Monastery, on the way back
