Skiing Near Cluj: Baisoara, Arieseni or Vartop?
Cluj has an advantage few Romanian cities share: three ski areas within three hours, plus reasonable access to the largest resort in the country. The drawback is that none of them has a decent public transport link, so the question of where to go always comes with the question of how to get there.
Muntele Baisoara — the closest
45 km from Cluj, from 210 lei per car. From the airport, 55 km and from 250 lei.
The main advantage is distance: leave in the morning, ski, return in the evening, no accommodation needed. The area is small and suits beginners and families with children. Do not expect variety — if you ski well, one day is enough. Being lower than Arieseni or Vartop, the season is shorter and more weather-dependent.
Best for: beginners, children, day trips, smaller budgets.
Arieseni — the best known
130 km from Cluj, 2h30–3h, from 590 lei per car. From the airport, from 630 lei.
The best known winter destination in the Apuseni, with a long season and a great many guesthouses spread along the valley. It also has the best tourist infrastructure in the area: places to eat, places to stay, equipment hire.
One practical detail: accommodation is spread over kilometres of valley rather than clustered in a centre. When you book a transfer, give the exact name of the guesthouse — otherwise you arrive "in Arieseni" with more travelling still to do.
Best for: weekends and longer stays, groups, anyone who wants resort life as well as slopes.
Vartop — the best snow
140 km from Cluj, 2h30–3h, from 630 lei per car.
Set in the pass of the same name, higher than Arieseni, which means more reliable snow and a longer season. In practice, when the rest of the Apuseni has thawed, Vartop is still skiable.
Being in a pass also makes it the most exposed to weather: after heavy snowfall the final stretch requires reduced speed and the journey can take 30–45 minutes longer.
Best for: early and late season, anyone who values snow over facilities.
Poiana Brasov — the serious option
305 km from Cluj, 4h30–5h15, from 1,240 lei per car.
The largest and best equipped resort in Romania: long runs, modern lifts, snow cannons, ski schools. Nothing in the Apuseni compares.
The cost is time — almost five hours each way. It makes no sense for a day trip; treat it as a three-night minimum. For a group of four skiers with equipment, a direct transfer is still simpler than a train plus a local bus plus a taxi with skis.
Best for: advanced skiers, week-long stays, anyone wanting a real ski area.

What to know about winter transfers
- Equipment travels free — skis, boards, boots. Tell us how many sets when you book so we send the right vehicle.
- We drive to the address, not to the resort car park.
- The return can be booked from the start, with pick-up from your accommodation on departure day.
- Winter tyres throughout the cold season. After heavy snowfall we drive at reduced speed — our estimates include a margin, but on days with snow warnings it is worth leaving earlier.
- For groups of 8 to 17, the 17-seat minibus carries people and equipment at a far lower cost per person than three cars.
