The slope at the Vartop Pass
Vartop is the ski area near Arieseni, set in the pass of the same name at high altitude — which means better snow and a longer season than elsewhere in the Apuseni. From Cluj it is around 140 km, covered in 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours, along the Aries Valley through Campeni and Garda de Sus.
In winter, plan with slack
The last part of the route climbs into a mountain pass. It is cleared of snow, but after heavy falls we drive at reduced speed and the journey can take 30–45 minutes longer. On days with snow warnings we recommend leaving as early as possible and keeping the return flexible.
