Poiana Brasov is the largest and best equipped ski resort in Romania, and from Cluj it is around 305 km — 4 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours 15 minutes of driving. It is a considerable distance, but for a group of four skiers with equipment a direct transfer is still simpler than a train plus local bus plus taxi with skis.
The route
The usual option: the A3 to Campia Turzii, the A10 towards Sebes, the A1 towards Sibiu, then the DN1 through Fagaras to Brasov and up into the Poiana. There is also a variant through Targu Mures and Sighisoara, chosen when traffic on the DN1 is blocked. The Sibiu – Brasov section is what dictates the duration, especially on winter weekends.
