Why travellers from Cluj fly out of Budapest
Budapest Ferenc Liszt Airport (BUD) is the largest hub in the region and, for many destinations, the only one with a direct flight from this part of Europe. The drive from Cluj takes 5 hours 30 minutes to 6 hours 30 minutes over roughly 450 km. People usually choose BUD over the local airport for one of three reasons: long-haul destinations that simply do not exist from Cluj, noticeably cheaper fares on the same route, or a connection with one stop instead of two.
The route, step by step
We take the DN1 towards Oradea, through Huedin and Alesd, then cross the border at Bors. On the Hungarian side, the M4 and then the M3 motorway lead towards Budapest, with the final stretch on the M0 ring road to the airport exit. Around two thirds of the journey is on motorway, which makes the timing predictable.

What time we leave Cluj
The rule we use: departure time minus 2 hours for check-in and security, minus the driving time, minus one hour of slack for the border and the Budapest ring road. For a 10:00 flight that means leaving Cluj around 00:30–01:00. It sounds uncomfortable, but the roads are far clearer at night and most passengers sleep in the car. The alternative is leaving the evening before and spending a night at an airport hotel.
What the price covers
The fare is per car, not per person, and covers up to 4 passengers with luggage. It includes fuel, the Hungarian vignette, road charges and the driver returning. Coming back from Budapest to Cluj
The same route works in reverse: we meet you in the arrivals hall with a name sign, and if your flight is delayed the waiting time is included.
