The lake at a thousand metres
Lake Fantanele, known to everyone simply as Belis, is the most popular chalet destination in the Cluj part of the Apuseni Mountains. It sits at around 1,000 metres altitude, roughly 75 km from Cluj — an hour and a half to an hour and 50 minutes of driving. The route follows the DN1 to Huedin, then climbs the county road through Rasca and Marisel to the lake.
The road, in detail
The first part, as far as Huedin, is good national road. From there the climb begins: mountain road, narrow in places, with hairpins and stretches of older asphalt. In summer it presents no problems; in winter, after snowfall, the journey can take 30 minutes longer and we drive on winter tyres. Our time estimate includes an allowance for road conditions.
Accommodation is spread out
The area has no compact centre: chalets and guesthouses are scattered over tens of kilometres, along the lakeshore and across the surrounding hills. In practice, one address in Belis can be 20 minutes from another. That is why it matters to give us the exact name of your chalet or a location when booking — we drive there directly, not to Belis village.
