Banffy Castle, half an hour from Cluj
Bontida is home to Banffy Castle, known as the Versailles of Transylvania — a baroque complex undergoing extensive restoration, open to visitors and used for cultural events. From Cluj it is around 30 km on the DN1C through Apahida, meaning 30 to 45 minutes of driving with no difficult sections.
Electric Castle
For most people, Bontida means Electric Castle first and foremost — the festival held on the castle estate that draws tens of thousands of people every summer. On festival days the transport situation changes completely:
- Traffic on the DN1C jams at peak arrival and departure times — leaving two hours before you want to be there is realistic
- Drop-off points are set by the organisers and change from year to year; we take you as close to the entrance as the traffic restrictions allow
- The night return, after 03:00, is the most requested ride of the whole festival — book early, because demand far exceeds supply on those nights
- Groups — for a party of 8–17, the minibus is the only sensible option on price
Outside the festival
For the rest of the year Bontida is a quiet visit of a few hours: the castle, the surrounding park and temporary exhibitions. It combines well with Gherla or Nicula Monastery, further along the same road.
