Nicula Monastery stands on a hill near Gherla, around 45 km from Cluj — 45 to 60 minutes of driving on the DN1C through Apahida and Bontida, then up the road to the monastery. It is known for its miracle-working icon and for the local tradition of painting icons on glass.
The 15 August pilgrimage
For the Feast of the Assumption on 15 August, tens of thousands of pilgrims arrive at Nicula from across the country and from the diaspora. On those days:
- Vehicle access near the monastery is restricted — we take you as close as the road closures allow
- Traffic on the DN1C is heavy; leaving very early or late in the evening avoids the queues
- Booking well in advance is essential — it is one of the few days in the year when demand completely outstrips capacity
Parish groups
A good share of demand on this route comes from organised groups: parishes, associations, extended families. For 8–17 people the 17-seat minibus is the natural answer — a single vehicle, a low cost per person, and departure at a time the group sets.

Outside the major feast days, Nicula is a quiet visit that combines well with Gherla or with Banffy Castle at Bontida, on the same route.
