Ice that never melts
The Scarisoara Ice Cave holds a block of ice built up over thousands of years inside a cave in the Apuseni Mountains. It is one of the largest underground glaciers in Europe and the main reason visitors head up the Aries Valley. From Cluj it is around 120 km, covered in 2 hours 20 minutes to 2 hours 50 minutes.
The route
We drive through Turda and Campeni, along the Aries Valley, then climb towards Garda de Sus and on along the road to the cave. The last stretch is narrow mountain road with a steep gradient; we take you as close to the entrance as the road conditions on the day allow.
What to bring
- Warm clothing — the cave sits at around 0 degrees all year
- Good footwear — the descent steps are damp and slippery
- Time — the visit itself takes under an hour, so it is worth combining with other sights nearby
Combinations for a full day
The cave alone does not justify five hours of driving there and back. Most visitors combine it with Arieseni, with the Vartop Pass or with the waterfalls around Garda. Tell us your plan when booking and we will agree a package with stops and waiting time included.
